Garmin R10 vs Shot Scope LM1: the budget launch-monitor face-off

Two ways to get real numbers without remortgaging — which one fits how you'll actually use it.

Affordable launch monitors have exploded, and these two define the entry tier. The Garmin Approach R10 is the established all-rounder: portable radar that pairs with your phone, tracks on-course rounds, and unlocks home simulator play through its app. The Shot Scope LM1 is the newer disruptor — a colour screen built in, so it works standalone with no phone and no subscription.

The split is really about how you'll use it. If you want to hit into a net and play virtual courses on a screen, the R10's app and simulator options make it the more complete toy. If you mostly want honest numbers — carry, ball speed, gapping — without faffing with a phone or paying monthly, the LM1's built-in screen and no-subscription model is the simpler, cleaner buy.

Neither is a replacement for a $2,550 photometric unit when it comes to spin and absolute precision, and both reward hitting off a proper mat with alignment to a target. But for the money, both deliver the thing that actually matters at this level: data consistent enough to practise against and gap your bag.

Get the R10 if 'simulator golf at home' is the dream; get the LM1 if 'just give me trustworthy numbers, simply' is the brief.

Want at-home simulator play? R10. Want trustworthy numbers with zero faff or subscription? LM1.
